Having enjoyed her first scuba dive at the tender age of ten, Lutwala owner Fern, has been diving for well over half her life. She has dived all over the world – Indonesia, South Africa, Mozambique, Philippines, Australia and Egypt to name but a few – but it was Gili Trawangan that stole her heart and she was based here for more than 10 years. Scuba diving is Fern’s true passion and she has qualified herself to an exceptionally high level. She is a PADI Master Instructor, a TDI Advanced Trimix diver with numerous deep sea dives well beyond 100m, a TDI Advanced Wreck Penetration diver and a TDI Extended Range instructor. She also offers many DAN speciality courses; Oxygen Provider, Neurological Assessment and Hazardous Marine Life Injuries. Fern now spends most of time in her home country, South Africa, where she runs Nomad’s South African Diving Tours.
Born in Oklahoma in the United States, Tori never even saw an ocean until she was nearly 30! Once she did she never looked back. She became a Divemaster in Oklahoma and then moved to Florida to become an Instructor and Dive Resort Operation Specialist. Now a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer, Instructor of over 20 Specialties, a DAN Instructor as well as a professional Underwater Photographer, Tori has worked in the Bahamas, US Virgin Islands, Alabama and Florida. Tori had always wanted to work and dive in Indonesia and in 2014 she made that dream come true and moved here with her husband Joe and 3 parrots to become General Managers of Lutwala Dive. Tori works closely with the Cats of Gili and runs the cat hospital here at Lutwala Dive; she also has recently helped found Horses of Gili and is also active in the Gili Island Dive Association.
From Massachusetts US, Joe manages Lutwala Dive with Tori and brings along a lot of technical knowledge to the team after spending many years building boats in the United States. In 2012 he became an avid scuba diver and has since worked his way up to a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer. He is also a great underwater photographer and a certified Regulator Repair Technician. Joe helps to maintain the dive compressors, generator and internet router here at the resort amongst many other duties. Joe fell in love with Gili Trawangan quite quickly and he and Tori plan to be here for many years to come! He lived for a number of years in Europe as a professional cyclist and can speak fluent Swedish as well as his native English.
Agus is one of our local team members from the island of Lombok. He came to us as an Advanced Diver with a degree as a technician and was initially hired to help out with repairs and maintenance. Fast forward a few years and Agus managed to work his normal job and do his Divemaster course with us. He worked for one year as a Divemaster and became fantastic at spotting all the cool stuff when we mutually decided he would make a terrrific instructor. We are proud to say that December 2017 Agus earned his PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor with us here at Lutwala! Agus is married to Ayu who often comes and stays with us at Lutwala and is also skilled at repairing nearly anything he sets his mind to. He is an invaluable member of our team.
Go is our second local staff member working his way up the PADI ladder! Go came to us from Bima which is the largest city on the island of Sumbawa. He originally came as boat crew and spoke zero English. He has worked very hard over the last two years and is now speaking English very well and has earned his PADI Divemaster. He did all of the theory in English! Go is in love with the ocean and is currently in Australia studying to improve his English even more. He will return shortly and plans on finishing his instructor later in 2018. Go is in love with Mustang cars and enjoys to play online video games when he isn’t out taking video of sea life with his Go Pro.
The local team
Lutwala Dive is lucky to be supported by an excellent team of Indonesian staff who are very friendly, smiling and always willing to help you with whatever you might need; kitting up on the boat, organising transport to and from the island, taking your order in the Lutwala Dive Cafe or advising you on what to do whilst on Gili Trawangan.
